Infrared Sauna vs. Traditional Sauna
A traditional sauna heats the air around you. An infrared sauna warms your body more directly, at a lower air temperature. Neither is better in the abstract. The right one is the one you will sit in three or four times a week, and that comes down to how it fits your home and how it is built. First, why people have sat in the heat for so long.
Heat was a daily discipline long before it was a product
Finns have bathed in saunas for centuries, and in 2020 UNESCO recognized Finnish sauna culture as intangible cultural heritage. Finnish even has a word, löyly, for the steam that rises when water is thrown on hot stones, a word that also carries a sense of spirit. The caldarium was the hot room of a Roman bath, and for many Romans, going to the public baths was a daily social routine. For generations, Japan's sento, or neighborhood bathhouses, made bathing a shared daily habit, and its onsen hot springs remain a favorite place to soak. Across ancient Mesoamerica, the Aztec, the Maya, and other peoples used the temazcal, a sweat bath still practiced in Mexico and Central America today.
Heat bathing shows up in many parts of the world, and each tradition has its own history and meaning. What they share is the habit: heat, often together, on purpose, again and again.
What we now understand about why it works
Heat raises your core temperature and makes your heart and blood vessels work, and the body adapts to that repeated load. The strongest long-term data we cover comes from Finland. In a study that followed 2,315 middle-aged men for about 20 years, men who used a roughly 175°F (79°C) sauna four to seven times a week had lower rates of fatal heart disease and death from any cause than men who went once a week 1. That is an association, not proof, and it was traditional Finnish sauna, in men.
Infrared is a gentler heat, often around 110 to 140°F (43 to 60°C) 2, and its research base is smaller. In a randomized Japanese trial of 149 people hospitalized with advanced heart failure, ten days of 140°F (60°C) far-infrared sauna did not meet its main goal, a blood marker of heart strain. It did improve walking distance and heart size on X-ray, with no serious side effects 3. Those patients are not you, and we will not borrow their results as a promise. A 2018 review of 40 studies of dry sauna, traditional and infrared, found mostly positive effects, though only 13 were randomized and most were small 4.
The honest read: heat is the best-supported practice we cover, infrared carries some of that weight but not all of it, and regularity matters more than intensity.
Traditional or infrared: how to choose
Heat and feel. A traditional sauna runs hot, often 175°F or more, with steam when you pour water on the stones. Infrared runs cooler, so sessions feel gentler and many people stay in longer.
Power and space. Many indoor infrared cabins run on a standard household outlet and fit a spare room. Traditional heaters and larger outdoor cabins usually need a dedicated 240V circuit and an electrician.
What you cannot fake. Judge a sauna by the wood, the heaters, and the shielding. Solid wood with tight joinery holds up to years of heating and cooling. Full-spectrum heaters cover near, mid, and far infrared. For low EMF, look for a named independent lab, not just a number in the marketing.
What matters less. Chromotherapy, audio, and app control are pleasant, but they are not why a sauna lasts.
Size. A one-person cabin suits a private routine. Two-person is the size most people end up happiest with at home. A well-made infrared blanket gives a real sweat with no installation at all, and it is a reasonable first step.
The ritual
Start with 10 to 15 minutes, three or four times a week, and let it build. In the Finnish study, sessions averaged about 14 minutes, and more frequent sessions went with the better outcomes 1. Drink water before and after, cool down slowly, and get out if you feel dizzy or unwell. In an infrared cabin you can stay a little longer at the lower temperature. With a blanket, follow the maker's time and temperature guidance.
