How we rate recovery gear

The Modern Recovery · Ratings current as of September 2026
We do not sell anything. When you buy through links on this site, we may earn a commission, at no cost to you. It never changes a score.

We rate every practice and every tool against the same five things: how it is built, the real evidence behind what it does, whether it does that one job honestly, whether it is fair value for its tier, and whether the company stands behind it for years. We score each one, we write down what we found and where we found it, and we tell you plainly when something does not clear the bar. The practices we cover have lasted thousands of years. The least we can do is be honest about the gear.

The five things we score

Build and materialsIs it made to last, from materials that suit the job? Heat, water, and daily use are hard on equipment. We look at fit, finish, insulation, seals, and whether it can be serviced.
Evidence for the practiceHow strong is the science behind the thing this product is for, stated honestly and cited. Heat and cold sit high because the research is real. Traditional sauna research is unusually strong, and we say plainly when a product's form of heat has a smaller evidence base than the tradition it borrows from. Younger practices sit lower. This line rates the practice, not the marketing.
Does one job, honestlyDoes it do the core thing well, without gimmicks, app-required nonsense, or features that exist to justify a price?
Value for its tierNot cheapest. Appropriate. Does the price match the build, the support, and the job, against real alternatives at the same level?
Company trustWarranty, support, and whether the company stands behind the product over years. We score this from the brand's published warranty terms, not from marketing. If a company publishes no warranty, it cannot score well here, however good the product.

The scale

●●●●●Exceptional
●●●●○Strong
●●●○○Solid
●●○○○Adequate
●○○○○Below the bar

We never average the five into a single number. Every product carries a short written verdict instead, because a number hides the reasons and the reasons are the point.

What the status means

Editor's PickThe one we would put in our own home in this lane. Strong or exceptional on every line, and the best balance of the five. A lane can have no Editor's Pick, and we say so.
Meets the StandardClears the bar and we recommend it. No line below solid.
HeldPromising, not yet featured. The evidence is thinner than the marketing, the support record is one we cannot vouch for, or we have not finished checking.
Does not meet the StandardNamed, with a brief, fair reason.
One rule protects all of this: build quality never buys a pass on honesty, and we never bend a rule to fit a product we like.

Cold immersion

No Editor's Pick yet.

Infrared sauna and heat

Editor's Pick: Clearlight Sanctuary 1.

Heat has the strongest long-term research of any practice we cover. That research is traditional sauna, and infrared carries some, not all, of its weight.

Movement, breath, and mat work

No Editor's Pick yet, and none is possible for now.

The evidence for slow breathing rests on small, short-term studies, so that line sits at solid for everything here, and an Editor's Pick needs strong or better on all five.

How we earn

The Modern Recovery is reader-supported. When you buy through links on this site, we may earn a commission, at no cost to you. We do not run hands-on tests, and we say so. We rate from build, published warranty terms, independent testing, and the research on the practice itself. Products we rate but cannot earn from are listed the same way as those we can.
